A Virtual Tour

Deer Prairie Creek Preserve

Deer Prairie Creek Preserve South entrance is located on Rt. 41 North,
just about a 1/2 mile south of River Road.

There's a long dirt road that leads to the park

It has a very large dirt parking lot to encourage equestrians to bring their horse trailers

And a nice little picnic area around the lake

Their map shows it's relationship to the Myakka River. On this trip I paddled up
the Deer Prairie Creek that leads all the way out to I-75

This is the small dam that separates the Myakka river from the creek

Putting a kayak into the water above the dam is quite easy

The water here is dark and tannic with alligators, turtles and a variety of water birds near the lake. But as you paddle up the creek... it becomes quite narrow and beautifully lined with palms., and oaks and spanish moss. The photo's below are pretty self explanatory.

The creek narrows immediately after leaving the lake
and get more and more beautiful as you go upstream

Trees hanging over the water draped in Spanish moss
keep things exciting as you go around every corner

Every so often you run into what seems an impassible swamp like area. But the vegetation
is actually just floating on top of the water and you can easily paddle through it

Just on the other side the creek becomes even more lush and beautiful

There is something uniquely beautiful around every corner. And since the creek
does not go straight for more than about 100' at a time... there are lots of corners

Just when you think the end is in sight...

You go around the corner and you're in a completely different environment

Just don't plan on doing too much on the banks of the creek as they are
mostly covered with vegetation and not accessible from a kayak.

Watch out for spider webs when paddling under overhanging trees and logs
